Well, let’s see. Spring has ris’. Mother Gaia has gone through the warmest Winter on record… again. Osama turned 50. The Iraq debacle turns 4.
It comes out that “KSM”, the 9/11 mastermind, admitted to everything done by Al Qaeda, all under torture, of course. If true, Osama must really miss him.
Iraqi government-sponsored death squads rule the streets. That country’s biggest (civil?) war contractor, Halliburton, bails out of close scrutiny to the regulation-free zone called Dubai. And, the Donald calls Bush a liar, the worst Pres in history.... Closer to home, primitive bigotries pervade the Quebec election, what with gay-bashing and charges of racism. As prep for a federal election, enviro-guy Dion comes on strong for law and order, while the law and order guy turns a shade of green, mostly as in greenback, what with all the promises and spending. What budget? Where’s the conservation? Already, the sense of urgency about Global Warming is getting a chill.
And, where’s the focus on the giant ape in the room? We wouldn’t have such eco-desolation, such consumption, such pollution if there weren’t so darned many of us. more »

What a week of pull-outs. The Brits are pulling out of Iraq, so close to “operational failure” in Basra, to consolidate against the bad guy’s buildup in Afghanistan. Five US generals threaten to pull out, as in resign, if Bush attacks Iran, as plans get ready. The Supreme Court unanimously pulls Canada out of the torture business, and back into the Charter of Rights. VPD Chief Jamie Graham pulls the plug after only 5 years, as a case of dumping gets pulled out of the past, nine years ago. Hershey is pulling out of Smith Falls, much to the entire town’s chagrin. And, Britney pulled her hair out, sort of.
A Mercury retrograde close on the heels of the Sun triggering the Saturn / Neptune opposition, what’s there to do but get out of Dodge, cowboys and girls? Nothing, if you prise your sanity, fellow introspectors.
With tough, demanding Saturn so close to Mother Earth, stark conditions must be faced realistically. With dreamy, distant Neptune so far away on the other side of the Sun, wishes and wide ranging visions must be buried. With quick, pensive Mercury going backward, turn to the ‘within’ and pull away from the ‘without’.
So, pulling within, I’m now going to pull out, for this week that is. more »

Since the Sun is still rather quiet, and the Astrological weather too, let’s focus on what last week’s “look ahead” might mean for you. Even if there has been a big flap at our “waffle”, with the blow out at BC Place, let’s thank Mercury, ruler of The Winds, for that. It also signifies that anyone with 16 degrees of Cardinal Signs important in their Horoscope is going through a transition, an important change, and with the two biggest Giant Planets involved, too often legal issues, real estate and control of property are included. ~~~~~~~~~ Skirmishes along your borders? Then the exact degree of your Ascendant are involved. Uprooting, or a big make-over? Then, it’s your Midheaven that’s so close to 16 degrees. Feeling confused, jostled by too much coming due all at once? Likely, it’s your Moon that’s close to 16 degrees of one of the four Cardinal Signs. more »

May the New Year be good to you. How better to learn than to take a look at what’s coming? As last year’s theme was dominated by the T-square of the Giant Planets, this one is dominated with a complex involving the same Giants, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune, but with a better potential for “growth” over “restructuring”. And, for a better outcome than last year, since this complex involves Venus.
Her involvement with Jupiter produces opportunities not often found. There will be a price to pay. After all, in any contest, though this needn’t be one, someone has to win, someone has to lose. Someone has to lead, someone has to follow. more »

John Rutherford is a friend of mine who gives me my regular chart readings...
Back in 1993, he once told me I would be addressing large crowds in the future...
Did I believe him then? I was definitely sceptical...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week: OK, that was then, this is now. Full Moon Monday as Mercury squares Saturn standing still. Talk about talking to a wall! A bit of bitterness in the tone? Then her sweetness, Venus, gets testy Thursday running over the Scorpion’s tail, the same time the Fat Boy aspects the Lords of Twisting. There’s nary a thing one can really do about budding tension until the weekend’s pointed statements and much unwinds. more »
“No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we’re looking for the sources of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.” – P. J. O’Rourke
What a bizarre week. Not so much for the weird and warped, the rethink and the double take, but for the sheer concentration of it. What a focus. It started with the fairly obvious, Britney splits with KFed on a Venus, the Lover, square Neptune, the Slippery. They were married on an opposition of the two, then had the “show” wedding with Venus opposed Uranus. Cute, but easily a no go. more »
Just in time for All Hallowed Eve, last week came in two main flavours. The first was a black liquorice streaked with red. And second, the garish, gritty green of envy. Flavour One was based on Mercury conjunct Jupiter, both square Saturn, through the 22nd and 23rd, with the giants exactly square Wednesday, the 25th. Itis major stuff when major Planets are involved. All considerations, decisions and statements (Mercury) take on extra importance. Though they may have been good (Jupiter) on paper, or supported well enough at the time, they face, or faced, resistance from various kinds of karmic, cultural, or social "debt". Liquorice flavour laced with red tape. And, all of a sudden (yeah, sure), the news was filled with examples. Ottawa wanted to send sailors and flyguys to Afghanistan. Taken back. Iggy wants to recognise Quebec as a nation, though not necessarily sovereign. Itis splitting the party. Duceppe says Quebec will be sovereign by 2015. Bring the troops home now where theyire needed! more »
“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.” (quote from Philip Dick) When the red light comes on in your car, do you ignore it? Studies show consistently that the cost difference between crisis management and preventive maintenance is about 3.5 or 4 to 1. Pass on your red light and see how much it will cost to get an engine overhauled!
Current studies from Tufts University suggest spending $3 trillion per year now on global warming will save spending $13 trillion per year by the end of the century. But, if nothing is done, that cost rises to $23 trillion per year, a conservative estimate since several factors, such as the shutting down of the Gulf Stream or loss of biodiversity, were not included. That’s 6 to 8% of what the global economy is expected to be by 2100. In business, loss of less than 3% can mean the difference between profit and bust.... As for us little folk, what about something personal? How’s the testy love life? How’s your physical well-being, your fitness? Venus, the Vain, always wants a pretty face or façade. Mars rules energy, drive and personal desire. Venus and Mars bracketed the Sun perfectly, symmetrically on either side, on 4 October.
Saturday’s New Moon shifts the core of this running episode of self-improvement. Then, the Sun aligns with Mars on Sunday, and swifter moving Venus next week Friday, just before Mercury turns backward and Neptune turns forward. Oh yeah, the “midterm” US election is going to be ferociously hairy, as in weird, wicked and nasty, akin to a second Halloween this year, when both of these square each other again. They’ll be markedly different from the one just Sunday past. Oooh, spooky. more »
John Rutherford is a good friend of mine. He is an excellent astrologer, and I check in with him every now and then.... like last week. John doesn't read your personality, or predict the future. He simply looks at the chart, checks the relationships between significant planets and constellations, the houses, and major points. Sound complex - you bet it is. But simple too! All he is doing is reading a map. You want to go somewhere? Read a map! But knowing how to read a map is what makes the journey interesting, insightful, and better prepared. ~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~~ ~~~ The current celestial T-square, involving 3 of the 4 giant planets, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune, is a time that calls many boundaries into question. Jupiter / Saturn sets up legal (Jupiter) boundaries (Saturn), including business deals and contracts. Neptune is the classic “dissolver” of boundaries. We see the biggest problem in Afghanistan and Iraq with porous boundaries. We saw some justice last week with prison sentences for the Enron brass trying to steal $60 billion. more »
John Rutherford is an astrologer and a friend of mine. Here's his astrological forecast for this coming week. ~~~~ Last Week: The Giant Planet T-square will leave effects for weeks to months. Last Wednesday, there was also a T-square of the Moon aspecting the Venus-Uranus opposition, but its effects only last days. Besides, it’s not a true T-square, as any Lunar configuration must be treated as a special situation (more at another time). And, throwing the Mercury-Mars alignment into the mix made it all so complex, didn’t it?
This week: Ah, some relief. Venus aspects Jupiter Tuesday to make this early Fall ever so loverly. The Moon is apogee Thursday, slow and distant, out of touch, triggering little. The New Moon is also a Solar Eclipse, but annular, and only seen from the South Atlantic. Ho hum. Chill, dudes and dudettes. more »
Practically nothing newsworthy for days and days on the national or international level, then both Mercury and the Sun opposed Giant Planet Uranus and surprise, surprise, all kinds of weird, idiosyncratic stories come springing out of the woodwork.
Stingrays don’t kill people, but, crikey, Steve Irwin sure got barbed. Suri Cruise was in deep hiding, then comes out with a splash in Vanity Fair looking like a miniature Elvis with that head of hair. Kiko’s baby lets the Nippon traditionalists breathe in relief, the 1st male heir in 40n years.
Bold Bull, Michael Ignatieff, came out charging with a platform full of challenges to our constitution, each one a threat of years, if not decades, of debate. Boy, he didn’t go to school just to be head of the debating team, did he? Sun and Mercury opposed big and pushy Jupiter in his Horoscope demands more and more, even if he steps all over rival Liberals. more »
OK, enough about all this international fiddle faddle. We know the US orchestrated Israel’s trip into Lebanon as a preliminary test of Bush’s bunker busters to be used in Iran against their nuclear facilities before he leaves the White House. Armageddonists in both countries are banking on it. We know many apparent casualties were staged by Hezbolla, so that because Israel didn’t win decisively, they won. Yellow flags flew all the way from Beirut to well south of the Litani.
We know the ceasefire is in name only, the Lebanese Army is in close with the Hez, so nobody is going to disarm, just going to keep the AK-47’s and Katushya’s out of sight. The most volatile, potentially dangerous, and heartless, aspect in Astrology is between Mars and Uranus. An 8am ceasefire last Monday had the opposition of these two exactly along the Horizon. Just sneeze and this thing will go off, perhaps by this Wednesday’s New Moon..... What’s really important is Astronomers will decide this week if what we call Planets are really Planets. Will our Solar System have 12, to include the Asteroid Ceres, the Earth Mother, or Xena out in the deep? Astrologically, it won’t make much of a difference. Pluto, the Catalyst, is not a dog but a Minor Planet, as is Ceres, both good for adding flavour to your Horoscope reading, but hardly the substantive meat and potatoes. And, Xena, though huge, is too far away to be effective. There will still be only four (4) Terrestrial Planets and four (4) Jovian Planets, eight (8) in all. That’s it! more »
John Rutherford is a good friend of mine... and has taught me lots about astrological readings, and been pretty accurate in the forecasts and readings that he has given me and my friends since 1993. Hope you enjoy....
“Red Alert!” “Mass murder on an unimaginable scale.” So ran terror-driven headlines. In a pig’s eye. Though an apparently legitimate threat, the airline gel-plot was known last year, the threat level upgraded last month. Unimaginable? Then where did all the numbers come from? This “new” threat was discussed years ago. Bush was informed last Sunday, and Cheney called reporters Monday to cry terrorist “WOLF!” The Big Question is, why Thursday? ....... That was the day Neptune, the Lord of Irritating No-See-Ums, came closest to the Earth. That was just after Lieberman lost the Democratic ticket, showing, so the spin goes, that Democrats are anti-war, anti-terrorist, and only encouraging Al Qaeda. That was the day Oliver Stone’s “World Trade Center” came out. Coincidence? With Neptune, the not always Artful Dodger, so prominent, it is not very likely. “It aims to not aim but mislead…” That was also the day two prominent members of Homeland Security resigned because of the Duke Cunningham bribery scandal. So much was choreographed. more »
In a classic example of Mercury retrograde, last weekend US Vice President Dick Cheney said that the trouble in the Middle-East was reason enough to vote Republican. It is another election year. Iraq and Afghanistan are falling apart, international respect for the US is at an all time low, Washington has nobody in Syria or Iran they are able to talk to, so any shred of diplomacy is impossible, and because of this people should vote for them?
It was merely curious when the RCMP had to change their time frame for the start of the country’s biggest recent man-hunt back when Mercury first turned around on the 4th. Mercury means data and notes, not just talking and travel. Any turn-around time means some sort of adjustment is necessary, no matter what. But then, last Tuesday, Gump Day hit. You know, as in Forrest, where stupid is as stupid does.
Gump Day was emphasized by the New Moon, an unstable time recommended for “pulling in” rather than reaching out. Both the Sun and Moon pulled together the influences of Mercury and Saturn, good if you are willing to “think hard”, but too often it can leave a brick in the head. The same day noted the death of a Canadian helping build schools in Afghanistan. It sounded like he was doing good things. more »
In a world of oppositions, what would you expect from the Sun? Oppositions, of course. We look at the Sun only from our own point of view, from here on Mother Earth. But, the Sun has its own point of view. The Planets, the four basic Terrestrials (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) and the four basic Jovians (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) adjust the Sun’s tempo. Along with its own internal rhythms (it has several), the Planets modify the Sun’s rhythms, nudge them into Planetary Synchrony....
With the biggest rush of international tensions since long before 9/11, really big tensions as the Mid-East hits a boiling Summer, all the Planets from the Sun’s point of view are in arrow-straight alignments going exactly through the Sun, and those alignments are all linked with each other! Saturn opposes Neptune (a slow grind), not seen exact from here on the Earth until the end of August. Venus opposes Jupiter (personal discords), Mars opposes Uranus (hair triggers, rash acts), and Mercury comes exactly between the Earth and Sun early Tuesday morning, triggering a global “shifting-of-gears”. more »
